Ben Lamb Urologist

Ben Lamb is a Consultant Urological and Robotic Surgeon at the Department of Urology, Barts Health NHS Trust, and Department of Urology, University College London NHS Foundation Trust.

Ben is Urology Cancer Lead and Prostate Cancer Lead and Barts Health. Ben looks after patients with suspected or confirmed prostate cancer. He undertakes diagnostic tests, including PSA test, Multiparametric MRI scan, prostate MRI-fusion biopsy and robotic radical prostatectomy, including Retzius Sparing prostatectomy.

Ben has performed over 250 Retzius sparing prostatectomy cases:

Ben performed nerve sparing in over 95%

93% of patients were continent by 6 weeks

Positive surgical margin rates were favorable (17.6%) compared to the national average (26.6%)

Ben trained in general urology and has specialist training in prostate, bladder and kidney cancers. Ben is fellowship trained in robotic surgery and has performed over 500 robotic operations.

Ben studied medicine in Cambridge and London. He completed his specialist training in hospitals in the south east of England. Ben has a Fellowship in Urological Oncology and robotic surgery from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia. From 2018 to 2022, Ben was a consultant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, before moving to London to be closer to his family.

Ben sees patients with a range of symptoms including:

-testicular lumps

-testicular pain

-blood in the urine (haematuria)

-blood in the semen (haematospermia)

Ben also sees patients who may be concerned about test results, such as PSA results. Ben is happy to provide information about PSA test, prostate cancer, or any other urological problem.

Ben tailors his approach to robotic radical prostatectomy (RARP) according to his patients’ needs. He always discusses the benefits and risks of strategies when planning surgery.

Strategies to improve recovery including nerve sparing, bladder neck sparing, urethral sparing, membranous urethral length or Retzius-sparing

Strategies to maximise the chance of cancer clearance including wide excision, or non-nerve sparing

Ben believes in a patient-centred approach to surgery that combines his professional expertise with patients’ priorities.

Alongside his clinical practice, Ben researches multidisciplinary cancer teams (MDTs). Ben has written and presented work on decision making, non-technical skills, and leadership in MDTs. Ben enjoys teaching medical students, doctors and allied healthcare professionals on communication skills, MDT improvement and urological cancers.
